Sailing Vessel FROG'S LEAP
Centurion 49 - Specifications and Background of the boat

This brand has been a well kept secret in the USA. It has sufferednot been a charter industry staple (like Bavaria) nor been marketed heavily like Swan. Sure, people know french boats, clearly there are two brands, Jeanneau and Bavaria. These are the valume guys. Wauquiez are less known, and are very difficult to find: it took me two years. The owners, like myself, get posessed by the boat, and become very involved in its maintenance and repair. There is a very active group of crazies like me on Yahoo.com. Wauquiez still remains a high quality brand today, long after Henri Wauquiez died. The company, founded in 1965, followed a tradition of quality, with the philosophy that boats have a Soul. These are semiproduction boats, not built by the thousands each year. Mine is C49 hull #47, about nine or ten years into the production of the Centurion 47 design which preceded the 49. That is about five boats a year for this model.Ed Dubois designed the original boat, and my new keel. He said Wauquiez hoped to build 20+ of the boats, the success of the design and the yard far exceeded his expectation. Designer Ed Dubois' success continued and he now design megayachts.

Thequality of the boat shows. I am the typical Wauquiez owner. I love the boat for its character and looks, I love that it performs reasonably well for a cruising boat(PHRF rating of 72), I want a boat that is secure on the ocean and in a storm, and finally, I could not afford a Swan. So, I settled for a Swanabee. When this boat was built, its price wassignificantly less than a Swan of equivalent performance and size, but the difference in quality is hardly felt.

They say when you sail one of these, the boat does not creak. And it is mostly true.

See http://www.wauquiez.com/ for the current company's front page, and an interesting history of the Wauquiez yard can be found in the tribute to Wauquiez which was published in the french sailing magazine Voiles et Voiliers.http://www.pretorien35.info/page/154309/index.v3
